LANGUAGES OF LOSS

After the destruction,

the Polish language choked in the mouth,

consonants tasting of ashes.

Yiddish was translated into memory,

the words becoming refugees,

living in the margins of foreign dictionaries.

All the letters in the kaddish sat shiva

surrounded by the ashes of burnt books.
